I'm starting to hate my year abroad already. Any advice?

10 answers

I was placed in a tiny town in Spain and so decided to live in a slightly bigger town 30 minutes away. However I'm finding this town is still too small. The average age of the people in the town must be in their sixties and I can't find anyone my age. I also cannot find any other language assistants in the area and I'm feeling really really lonely. I cant live in the main city as it's almost 3 hours away. I have plans to go visit friends in other areas of Spain over the next 3 months but no one to spend the evenings or the weekends with. This is starting to make me hate the year abroad and want to give up and come home already. I cannot go on feeling like this for another 8 months. Any suggestions for making me feel better?

Can a relationship survive the year abroad?

8 answers

I've been in a relationship for 3 years now, and have decided to go on the year abroad to the USA as part of my Business degree. I am so nervous about it because I love my boyfriend but I'm worried about so many things, mainly that I will only be able to come home once in the year - at Christmas - and he can only afford to fly out and visit me once, and also that I have been told it's not a good idea to keep Skyping every day as you miss out on cultural things and having fun, but I want him to feel loved and know I'm thinking of him - has anyone who has been through this before got any advice?!

Small city in France to spend my year abroad?

7 answers

I'd really like to spend the year in France, preferably studying, but want to avoid the big cities (Paris, Marseille, Lyon etc.) as they seem quite impersonal and might be quite difficult to meet people. I want to find a much smaller city with friendly locals and an opportunity to get to know the WHOLE of the city really well! Any ideas?

Do you get your languages mixed up?

Trying to decide whether to study Spanish and Portuguese or Spanish and English at uni. I'm worried that if I go for Spanish & Portuguese I'll end up getting really confused and won't improve as much as I would if I just focused on Spanish. I'm also worried about going to two countries on a year abroad. Does anyone have any advice??
