Past experience of obtaining the travel grant when parental income is over the 40,000 threshold?

1 answers

Was wondering if anyone has experience of this who's combined household income is over 40k and whether they got any travel grant? I'm expecting to have expenses regarding visas, flights and health insurance of around £3000 for my year abroad. My dad is retiring in August which will take a lot of income away however the combined income will be around 55k still after this. The problem is, for the tax year this year, he will have been paid in full for 6 months which pushes the amount up quite a lot - would this be considered in assessing whether I am eligible for the travel grant as by the time I leave for the US (mid August) he won't be working and household income will be around the 55k per year mark It's all very confusing however I could really do with the travel grant!

We have a holiday home in France and a UK home. Are we entitled to apply for a Carte Vitale and also hold an EHIC?

1 answers

We are here in France for 6 months and spend the rest of the time between Spain and the UK. Should we need treatment - not emergency treatment - here in France, would we be eligible to access it with a Carte Vitale without causing problems in the UK?

Anyone stayed in Résidence Saint-Jaques before?

0 answers

I'm in the middle of researching places to live during my term in Paris and I've come across Résidence Saint-Jaques in the 14th arrondissement. I can't find an awful lot of information about the place and or many pictures so I was wondering if anyone here has viewed it or stayed there before or knows someone who has? I'd be extremely grateful for any help you can offer! Here's the link in case there are other Saint-Jacques I don't know about: https://logement.clubetudiant.com/properties/residence-saint-jacques/#dossier

Which is the best French city to do a masters in FLE (Français Langue Étrangère)?

0 answers

I am an Indian girl who would be moving to France this year to do a masters in FLE. I have to choose between the universities of Rennes 2, Jean Jaurès Toulouse, Stendhal Grenoble (Grenoble Alpes), Franché Comté, Artois and Nantes. Some cities like Toulouse, Rennes have lots of foreign students whereas others like Besançon, Nantes have more of natives. Since I will be doing a masters in the French language, living in which type of city would be beneficial for me? Moreover, I want to work part-time as a translator (French-English/English-French), so, I wanted to know where I could find work easily. Also, given that I am Indian, I want to live in a city free from any kind of hostility or racism. Please suggest the best possible option keeping in mind all these factors.

Are currency cards a good idea to use in Russia ?

0 answers

I'm going on my year abroad in Yaroslavl and Kazan in August and I am wondering about the best way to handle money over there? I've read that Russians use cash more than anything else but if I have to pay charges every time I take cash out, I know it's going to cost me a lot... And I don't really feel comfortable with the idea of having huge amounts of cash with me. So I guess my questions are: are currency cards a good way to handle money and if yes which brand/bank? And if not, then what is the best way to handle money in Russia?

Is Salzburg, Austria covered by any German mobile networks? If not, what phone contract is recommended for a Austria/Germany split Erasmus year?

0 answers

I'm spending half of my Erasmus year abroad in Salzburg and the other half in Munich. As I can't seem to find any 6 month contracts over there (I'd rather not have prepaid because I'll be using a lot of data), I'm going to have to get a 12 month contract, so was looking for one that covered both Salzburg and Munich, despite them being in different countries. As Salzburg is right on the German border, I thought maybe it would share German mobile networks, is this true?

Can anyone recommend the best SIM card to get in Germany to put into my unlocked UK phone? Preferable one that offers a large date allowance for the lowest cost and no cancellation fee?

0 answers

I have an unlocked iPhone 5s and I want to buy a SIM card that will give me a large data allowance as I will mainly be using whatsapp and facebook messenger to communicate with friends also on a year abroad and my family at home. I will be in a town called Freising near Munich doing an internship for 6 months, then going to Lyon for 6 months.
