Would you recommend taking up a language ab initio?

I've always fancied the idea of learning a language but was put off a bit by the teachers at school. I am considering applying to do a course that would allow me to learn Chinese ab initio. Does anyone have any experience of this and would you recommend it?

Much depends on how much you really want to do it and how much effort you are prepared to devote to it.  Are you good at languages generally? If Chinese is to be your first foreign language you might find it quite tough!

It's not Chinese, but I've written an article for the Third Year Abroad website on learning a language ab initio.
