To what extent should your language choices be based on your year abroad?

I am struggling between continuing with Russian, or picking up Spanish and spending time in South America. I realise that the location should not really define which language you pick, but a year is a fair amount of time to spend to spend in a place that you are unsure of.

This is a question that students ask me every year! Ultimately, you are the only person who can answer it. Which language appeals to you more? Which culture are you more interested in? Which place could you imagine yourself spending a year in? Both languages could take you to some fascinating places and both could open up exciting career opportunities. Why not use location as a way of deciding? It's a good a way as any! Do what you really want to do - follow your instinct!
