Whether or not a year abroad is compulsory varies depending on your course and university.
For language students, a year abroad is almost always compulsory, unless you've made other arrangements with your university (they may take extenuating circumstances into account, such as illness or family issues).
For other subjects, a year abroad is usually optional, again depending on your university and specific course.
The best thing to do would be to discuss this with your uni (or, if you haven't yet applied, to contact any universities that you're interested in attending) as they'll be able to give you more detailed information on the year abroad options open to you.
Hope that helps!
