If you can convince your parents (from experience I can tell you this is not so easy!) then I would definitely recommend going abroad. The world really is so small, and in the majority of places you go you'll find fun and welcoming people in hostels. I went abroad to Australia not knowing anyone, checked into a hostel there and was instantly made the feel welcome and involved. Don't be nervous to throw yourself in the deep end - loneliness can be a horrible thing, but travelling can be hugely liberating and fun. Perhaps travel with a friend if anyone else is keen (although the freedom of travelling on your own is great, I assure you!) Enjoy :)
