How do I set up a bank account in France?

I'm reading up on finding accommodation in Paris and have come across information that says you can't pay your deposit with an English cheque. But don't I need proof of address to open a bank account? What is the best way around to do things and how am I best taking my money with me? Also, what bank accounts would you recommend? Thank you!
