How do I make friends abroad?
I'm in the second half of my year abroad, studying at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. After a pretty rubbish experience in my first country of my year abroad last term, I'm struggling enormously with my self confidence (I'm shy and introverted by nature) and making friends. Does anyone have any advice on how to make friends, please? I'm very shy and find it hard at the best of times.

Though I wouldn't say I'm an introvert, it's massively difficult making friends on a year abroad - especially when you aren't at a university or in small place. I would suggest looking on Facebook to see if there are any 'new people in [insert place name]' groups and see if they're organising any events. Another way would be to join a club, possibly a language class (means lots of chatting) or a sports group. Also, don't worry yourself too much about making friends in the target language yet. English mates are okay to have too! Ultimately, you may have to make the first move in chatting to people - remember you're foreign so you're interesting! I made my best friends on a train journey and asked for their numbers. Those friends stuck with me for the whole year because I plucked up a bit of courage to chat. Best of luck with it!xx
