Northumbria University offers a wide range of opportunities for all Undergraduate students to study abroad as part of a degree programme or as a summer or Easter placement. Undergraduate students usually study abroad for one semester in which time you will need to earn the equivalent of 60 UK credits towards your degree from Northumbria.

There are a number of options for study abroad. If your course has a compulsory placement or year abroad, you can take part either as a funded Erasmus student or non-funded outside Europe. There is also the opportunity to study for one semester at one of our partners. Many of our partners teach in English so there are no language barriers to participation and you may take the opportunity of an Intensive Language Course at the University prior to commencing your studies.

Exchanges offer the opportunity to travel and live in another country and learn different customs and traditions. You will also encounter different ways of learning, make new friends and learn new skills to add to your CV. We have a number of exchange agreements with universities in Europe, USA, Canada, and Australia. Exchange programmes allow students to study for periods of three months, one semester, or two semesters in a university in another country. There are two types of exchange available: those arranged though the Erasmus programme of the European Union and those arranged with non-European Universities.

First year students enrolled on a three-year programme are invited to apply to spend the second year (or first semester of the second year) of their QMUL undergraduate degree abroad. Some of QMUL’s four-year degree programmes offer students to spend their third year abroad to come back to QMUL for the fourth year (e.g. Law, SLLF). The academic work students complete abroad will be credited towards their QMUL degree. Students on a degree programme including a work placement/year in industry (Erasmus+ traineeships), can also benefit from the programme.
