The University of York believes every student should have the opportunity to gain an international experience of some kind. They recognise that students will have careers in a global market place and that international activity broadens the educational experience. Through their Centre for Global Programmes, they can offer students a range of exciting options to study or work abroad.

Worldwide exchange programme

If you would like to exchange a year at York for year at an exciting overseas destination such as North America, Australia, Asia or South Africa, we have exchange agreements with a varied range of prestigious university partners. Studying abroad will not lengthen your overall period of study; students on a three-year degree would replace their second year, students on a four-year degree would replace their third. Find out where you can go.

Short programmes

Do you want an international experience but don’t want to go for a full year or in term-time? We have three official summer school partners and two University of York International Study Centres which could be for you. Find out more about our International Study Centres, and find out who our official summer school partners are.

For study placements each department has its own specific Erasmus agreements, in some cases the period abroad forms part of a four-year course with a built-in year in Europe. In other cases you may be able to apply to spend part or all of your second year at a partner university in Europe. Some students can combine a period of study with a work placement. Some departments offer the opportunity to participate in a British Council assistantship or an industrial work placement as part of your degree. The Erasmus scheme provides a grant which can be used towards the cost of travel and living expenses within Europe. You may also obtain an Erasmus grant towards learning a language for your exchange. Find out which universities you can apply for.
