I’ve got to admit; my year abroad has been a whole lot smoother thanks to my smartphone. This year I’ve been working as a British Council Language Assistant in Avignon, so I’ve had lots of free time to travel around and have discovered a couple of handy apps that have made my life so easy! Here are my top 9 apps every year abroad student needs to download (if you haven’t already):

1. WordReference
It took me ages to realise this translate website actually has an app. This online dictionary is an absolute necessity for language students or people studying in non-Anglophone countries.

2. BlaBlaCar
Out here in France, car sharing is hugely popular and is often cheaper than travelling by train. The app allows you to quickly look up and book onto someone’s journey in just a few taps.

3. airbnb
I’ve used airbnb loads since being abroad; I’ve been travelling around a lot and most of the time it’s actually cheaper than staying in hostels. Lots of people have suggested booking an airbnb when you arrive and are looking for accommodation. Usually the hosts are so friendly and will do their best to help you settle in.

4. Instagram
In case you haven’t got this one already, it’s a must-have for documenting all your memories and photos. Trust me, there will be lots of Insta-friendly moments during your time away.

5. Touchnote
Sending postcards to friends and family has never been easier – in fact, you can do it without leaving the comfort of your apartment/house/wherever you end up! This has been so useful for sending personalised cards to friends all over the world or pictures to family back home.

6. Voyages-SNCF
This one’s specific to me in France, but chances our your country’s train network will have an app which is always useful for double checking train times when you’re out and about.

7. Rome2Rio
All you have to do is enter your start and end destinations anywhere in the world and this clever little app will work out exactly how to get there with the different forms of transport you can take. This works for both a short bus ride in a small town and a flight across the world – it can cover any journey!

8. Picolo drinking game
A fun drinking game that can be a great icebreaker when hanging out with new friends. A bonus for language students – set your phone to your target language and the app will change too!

9. WhatsApp
With loads of my friends abroad this year, this is pretty much the only way we communicate now, especially as you’re able to keep your English number even when you change sim cards and you don’t have to worry about roaming charges.
