Voluntary Services Overseas
Voluntary Services Overseas offers the chance to work in a variety of sectors, including health, education and goverance to name a few, in order to beat poverty on developing countries. They offer volunteer placements across South America, Africa and Asia.
The Dodwell Trust
The Dodwell Trust aims to find volunteers to work in schools. Charging a (relatively small...) fee, it's a great way to get to grips with the culture and give something back! Read Alice's review of it here.
Akanyavoko
Here's a refuge dedicated to helping young girls, who would otherwise be in prison awaiting trial to prove their innocence against allegations of petty crime. The refuge is over 40 years old and they're looking for volunteers to help with child care, teaching, environmental work and much more.

An organisation that offers work within West Africa, ranging from research, education, women's issues, legal aid, small business development, and loads more. Check out their website for more info as to where you could work, and in what field.

A website that seems targeted at American students, you may come across an environmental gem or two - the organisation offers opportunities to work in Central America, but check with their points system to see whether your university might support their work in terms of credit points. ICADS also offers Spanish classes, for those of you who don't speak the lingo, or would like to brush up on your skills whilst out there.

WWOOF Here's a website dedicated to working on organic farms in exchange for food and shelter. The organisation offers up possibilities in quite a few locations worldwide, so make sure you check regularly as it gets updated quite frequently.
WorkAway A great online resource for all sorts of work, in all sorts of place across the world, for long or short periods of time.
British Council Youth Programmes
This is a programme funded by the European Union allowing young people to work across Europe for up to a year. All expenses are paid, and a monthly allowance is paid towards living costs. Language skills are not necessary for most placements, and language tuition is included.
