Hamburg, Germany - vibrant, noisy, studenty, tourism, Erasmus  The social scene was excellent. Hamburg has Germany's largest entertainment district with plenty of students (German and foreign) making the most of the many sights, clubs and bars. I really enjoyed my time out there, but I advise you to have your accommodation sorted before you go as it just makes everything a whole lot easier and less scary.

Useful local words: ‘Moin’ (hi) and ‘Labskaus’ (local dish with fish, pickles etc).

What not to pack: Too many smart clothes.

What to pack: A warm coat.

Couldn't have done without: A laptop with Skype and some proper English teabags.

Word of advice: Try to be disciplined about speaking the languages while you’re there - don't just fall into the easy option of hanging around with English/Erasmus groups.
