Useful local words: 'пижо́н'.
What not to pack: Too many books.
What to pack: A warm coat.
Couldn't have done without: (Skype!), good shoes and a sense of humour.
Word of advice: When it comes to your third year abroad, don't worry too much about it - everyone has difficulties at first. The best thing to do regarding accommodation is to go out to your city in the summer, if possible, and spend a week or so there to get it sorted before you arrive. Come September, doing anything is a nightmare and could well put you off the city and the experience.
